Stickies are so long as to be useless

I can see why certain topics are stuck to the top of their forum --- but once a sticky thread has gone over a few hundred posts, or is over a year old, then it's no use to anyone coming new to it.

For example: I'd like to know about Virgin media, but the 'retention' sticky is about 3000 posts long and goes back about four years. Any contemporary discussion is lost in the mists of time.

And the presence of the sticky makes asking the question intimidating.

So my suggestion is; once a sticky goes over 200 posts, or the first post in a stuck thread is over a year old, the thread should be cut loose to sink, and a new discussion be allowed to start.

  • I agree, especially with the bit about it being imtimadating to ask a question, especially when you get 'told off' for not reading the whole thread as that question had alredy been asked.
Sometimes you need a quick answer and you don't have a spare hour to read through hundreds of posts.
For eg; i am going to New York in a couple of months, i have read the whold thread about anything and everything to do with NY and it has answered some questions, but it gets confusing as a lot of it is 'out of date' and am too scared to ask anything incase i get told to read the thread, which i have.

  • Yes, but because the stickies *are* so long ,some posters seem to be of the opinion that everyone should read them.

However, my point was really that a sticky thread that was started five years ago is packed with mostly redundant information. Cutting it free would be beneficial to ALL users, including those that actually want to read several hundred posts on a topic.

I agree, but I think it's more than just stickies, also long mass-merged threads in general. As an example... the old school Lakeland thread, which has a whole bunch of dead links in it, and IIRC, some discussion of items they don't sell anymore :)

  • Hi folks,

I think this probably varies case by case. If you have specific examples, best option is to PM the board guide for that board and they can look into it
