Internet and Sky at student house - help

Hi there.
I am moving into a house with 3 others in September on a 40 week contract. There is a BT line fitted (I assume!) although the current users use NTL.
Either way, I am trying to look into an internet connection and whats the best way to go about it. We'd need an uncapped fafst broadband speed, but can you sign 40 week contracts instead of 12 month ones? Obviously a 12 month contract is silly for us as we'd be paying for 4 extra months nearly.
Also with Sky can you also make deals for lesser contracts than 12 months?
Thanks for any help
p.s we all prefer sky to ntl thus the awkwardness

Minimum contract with sky IS 12 months. However you can always lower the package to the absolute minimum for the last few months, but build it into your costing from the beginning.0

We've had BT broadband on a nine month student package this year, between the 4 of us. I think it is capped but we've never gone over it at all with 4 of us living here, but I don't think any of us go in for downloading at all. Telewest also do student packages for TV so it might be worth checking them out if you can get it in your area.£2 Coin Savers Club £14 :j (joined 18/2/06)0

I guess that if they are currently using NTL then you'd also have to pay for BT line rental on top of the internet charge. Have you looked at the NTL broadband options? Why do you prefer Sky? I've never had a problem with my NTL.
Sky will be launching a broadband package shortly, but I'm not sure if that is just for downloading movies or if it's a full-blown broadband service like you'd expect. I'll see if I can find out tomorrow.0 -
NTL is really the best deal for students. We really shopped around - as we would have loved to have Sky but its just not worth it.
NTL do special student rates - 9 month contracts I think - but i'm sure you could just extend it to ten. They usually do great deals at the start of the term - for tv, phone and internet in a package. I'd definately look into them!0 -
Freedom2Surf's minimum ADSL contract is only 6 months:

Zen are also excellent, but the price is high for home use.
I know Telewest will do 9-month contracts for cable TV.
Hope that helps.0 -
We prefer sky because we're all poker players thus would love the free poker channels for a start :P
We also would like an uncapped internet connection as we are all also enthusiastic online gamers and im sure filesharing in large amounts will be going on too... not good for a capped connection rite?
Will look into all the options so thank guys

Maybe you should give Telewest a try. In my house we got broadband internet and cable TV for £15 a month. Although we are in the house for a year (we're all Masters students) and we eneded up paying £30 each for the year. I think they do less then a years contract as they aim it at the thousands of students who live in my area.:j Take That 23/12/2007:j :dance:0

I'd recommend NTL's £9.99 student package- 9 month contract for internet... Allegedely it's capped, but we've never had a bill through saying we're overusing.
They also do a landline, broadband and NTL tv for £30 which is quite a good thing...

P.S If you're students, then surely you should be getting out a bit more?! Sitting in watching Poker on the TV can be done when you graduate
Go out and enjoy it (says she who is a couple of weeks away from finishing uni for good and is wishing she made the most of it a bit more....)

You could always ask Sky to give you a shorter contract, make it seem like you won't choose them if you can't (just say you'll go with NTL who provide student contracts). I'm sure they're rather have a customer for 9 months rather than not at all.0

I take uni itself too seriously to get drunk nights before lectures

Either way... looks like its gna hav to be ntl thus no poker... *sobs*[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."
