Dry clean curtains

I have 7 sets of cream curtains that need cleaning but the labels say dry clean only.

Obviously taking them to the dry cleaner is not very MSE :money: so wondered if anyone had any tips? Being cream they just look grubby!

do you think that you could put them in a dryer with one of those Dry cleaning kits?

Might have to do each one separately.
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.

Are they expensive? Just sick of having grubby looking curtains. Need them to be bright ready for the winter to encourage the light in.

I'm not recommending this because it might not work in your case but it worked for me.

Earlier this summer I had two pairs of curtains that desperately needed cleaning. They're fully lined and the dry cleaner estimated £70 for both pairs. I couldn't bring myself to pay that much so decided to throw one pair into the washing machine to see what happened. There was a tiny bit of shrinkage and I had to let the hems down by about an inch. It was a risk but in my case it saved a lot of money....would it be worth trying one of your pairs on a cool wash in the machine?

why not chuck one in the washing machine on
a cold wash, use that Ariel Excel colour then
spin them on the fastest spin speed to get
out as much of the water as poss then line
dry them.Did mine that way when I was quoted
£165 each curtain on a special half price promotion
at the dry cleaners plus a 20% staff discount.
£330 I was shocked and so where they.
Worth the risk because dry cleaning is very expensive
and all those chemicals in the air afterwards dont seem like
    a good idea.

What are they made of? And do they have fixed in linings?

  • I washed mine and the fabric shrunk anout 2 inches but my lining stayed the same so now they look a bit like when you see old ladies skirts with petticoats hanging down ...........( maybe that only happens where I live )

  • I have never dry cleaned curtains but like junglie says, you take a risk. I wash them on the cold wool wash, which is very short, and then line dry them. I did this with our cream 100% cotton curtains, which are lined and weighted, and they came out beautifully. It does depend how desperate you are.

I tried washing cream curtains in the washing machine and they came out like dish rags, I had to chuck em as no amount of ironing would get the creases out . Such a shame but its a risk you take...

What about hand washing in cold water?

I've just bought drh clean only curtains from a charity shop but I know they've been through the wash. They are fine, but will yours be that's the question?

If you dont want to risk washing them, lie them in the bath with some stardrops overnight - just one at a time so there is plenty of room.

I do this with my blinds and the come up brilliantly - we only smoke in the conservatory so they are done pretty regularly.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
