My complaint with them is that there is never anyone to ask about anything. I wanted a particular book a while ago. I gave up looking for floor staff and queued for ages and the cashier jsut said the manager should be at the back. He wasn't as I had already been there. Waterstones is much better in my opinion.Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination:beer:

whsmith just make me sad now

the ink cartridges in the clearance section online are more expensive than most shops.
and well dont bother emailing customer services - 2 weeks later i got a reply
Love is the answer. At least for most of the questions in my heart,
Like why are we here? And where do we go?And how come it's so hard?
It's not always easy,And sometimes life can be deceiving,
I'll tell you one thing, its always better when we're together0 -
wh smith have always had "sales" like these..i try n steer clear from them..but you can get some good bargains in their clearance sections
also about the "add on sales" I use to work for woolworths and we were told if we didnt offer one when we worked on the tills we could get a warning...they would even send in "secret shoppers" in to make sure we did...but i must admit there is far too much confectionary on sale on the counter and it does look like a jumble sale.im tray not davey...pinched my hubbys account!!!
I must stop buying smellies..well until i spot a bargain!
never turn a bargain /freebie down you just never know when you need it

There are other places that do this kind of "at-the-till" selling. I try to piddle them off as much as I can in the vain hope that they'll stop. Funnily enough, they have.
At M&S:
Cashier: "Will you be paying with your M&S card today?"
Me: "Isn't that question somewhat presumptious on me having an M&S card in the first place?"
At Superdrug:
Cashier: "Do you need any stamps or phone top-ups today?"
Me: "Yes."
Cashier: "What do you need?"
Me: "I need a book of first class stamps."
Cashier: "Here you go. That's £3 please."
Me: "No, I haven't got enough to buy them. That's why, while I need them, I haven't satisfied that need yet."
At Poundland:
Cashier: "And can I interest you in any lubricant today?"
Me: "It sounds like you're threatening me..."0 -
I haven't been in Whsmith for ages. And even then I got asked if I wanted to buy some chocolate at the till.
At BHS I always get asked if I want to take out a store card.
At Iceland I get asked if I have a bonus card (whatever that might be).
Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £18,886.270 -
Iceland bonus card isnt much cop to be honest. Free 50p coupons in post once in a blue moon. You cant collect points or anything with it0

It was similar in River Island, when I worked there a few years ago. We had to sell the store cards on customers. If we didn't ask at the till, remind/advertise (verbally) in the changing rooms, with shoe fitting, if a customer was thinking about buying something....we'd have the management on our backs- not so much the store manager, but the area manager, the head office, the people we didn't see very often- they'd send round spies (mystery shoppers) to check we were asking. Then if we didn't, a description of us would be sent to our manager and we'd get a warning. It was essential at the till point- it could lose you points in a survey from a mystery shopper and get your store loss in funding for things, stop funding for any nights out (not that we cared anyway- it would be things like bowling or the cinema) if we didn't get enough points from a mystery shopper.
But it worked against the brand: the cards became like homework does to a 14 yr old chav: we all refused to sell them, or did so overly obviously when a manager was around, so it looked OTT. It became a store joke amoung us all! Think if we sold any after our little speeches, it'd have been a miracle- but to be honest, it was pent up agnst at a management team who lacked the ability to think of their staff as part of the team and instead tried to treat us as their slaves... (I'll stop now before I start to give you all ideas !)0 -
I always get asked at Topshop and Dorothy Perkins. In days of yore, I took out the storecards as a student, and ran up debts on them, unaware of what 29.9% APR meant. So I don;t think they'd want to give them to me again now!
I did get a 400g block of Dairy Milk at Smiths for 59p a few weeks ago, but then I was going to pick up some chocolate with my weekly shop anyway.0 -
