OPENING EMAIL ???

Pat__3 Posts: 2,880 Forumite
I have a problem just recently, that when I receive email with Outlook Express, when I open the email if there is a link in that email for me to open when I click on it, it will not open this has only just started to happen in the last week ???.

I did downloaded Firefox then decided to uninstall it and I think this may be affecting it as there seems to be still parts when I do a Reg Cleaner thing and it still shows Mozilla in the registry.
Not too good at explaining techy stuff so I hope I have explained it enough for anyone to help.

Any help is much appreciated. :)

In OE, Tools -> Options -> Security. Ensure that the 'Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could contain a virus' option is NOT checked.

Not sure that Firefox does that on install, but it's the first thing to check.

Thanks LincsLad, But it doesn't actually say Do not allow attachments etc all I can find is a block images etc which was checked so I unchecked it but it has made no difference ???

I really don't know where to look as I have mail that have links within them and I can't open them :-/
  • Have you checked that html file extensions are associated with IE again?

You mentioned that you installed Firefox and as such internet file types would then be associated with this, however upon un-installing there is a likelihood that the file types would not be associated back to IE?

You can check this by opening a Windows Explorer going to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.

Look for html (or what ever the file type you were opening) and check that it’s associated with IE. If not, click on ‘Change’ and select IE.

This might be a totaly useless suggestion.if so ignore, could you forward the whole email to another mail acc,(Yahoo,MSN) and try opening it from there?

If all else fails, you could try reinstalling Internet Explorer, which will reinstall Outlook Express as part of the process.

I had an issue last week with Outlook Express where I could open emails, but could not see any of the contents. There was nothing obviously wrong with any of the OE settings, and reinstallation fixed it.

Reinstallation shouldn't be a long process as the installer will detect you already have IE, and will prompt you for the components you want to reinstall. Make sure you tick Outlook Express - it will probably try and tell you it doesn't need to be re-installed!

Sounds like you no longer have a default browser set.

There is no need to reinstall IE tho.....

See here to reset IE as default.

Thought those of you who tried to help me would like to know the out come. :)

Just a small thing, I went into Start and in there is:- Set Program Access And Defaults so I did as OutLook Express wasn't ticked so I ticked it and it works now, I can open the links fine now that I receive in my emails.

Thank You, wouldn't have found it if it wasn't for you all having me root around ;D

    Thumbs Up. :)
