Can we listen to ipod through DVD player

My son is going to Uni and doesn't want to take ipod speakers as well as everything else so we are wondering if we can somehow connect his ipod to the dvd player to listen to the music through his tv?

If it has an auxillary sound input (i.e. single socket, the same size as the ipod's headphone socket) you can connect with a 3.5mm stereo cable, which are very easy to find.

Ok another question we are just buying him a dvd player and have seen a sony one but it does not have HDMI (whatever that is?) is this what he will need to be able to listen to his ipod through it?

Basically he is taking a tv that is not HD ready so we just want to buy him a freeview box (which we think overrides the switch over so he doesn't have to take a new tv to his uni?) and also want to buy a basic DVD player that he can also listen to music through. That if t gets damaged/robbed or anything it has not been a large outlay.

HDMI High Definition Multimedia Interface. Some DVD players upscale the resolution of DVD when used with hi def TVs. You don't need this, all you need for the ipod is an audio port on the TV, could be phono connectors or use scart with and adapter.
