Driving after a night out?

I was out last night and finished drinking at 11pm. It is probably safe to say I consumed much more units than the government recommends. However I did not eat yesterday evening and have drank a lot of water since coming home yesterday, at least 7-8 pints (I love water!).

When is it considered "safe" to drive after consuming alcohol the previous night?

It works on units and hours, at the most basic level.

As a rule of thumb, one unit of alcohol takes an hour ... but one drink isn't one unit. Many drinks are more than one unit.

Many people can easily drink 3 units in an hour.

    How much did you have?
    At what times?
    Of what drinks?
At what time did you drive?

Well I haven't driven yet, I want to go out shortly to visit family. I wasn't sure if it would be recommended to be driving 14 hours after drinking.

Well.. at 7pmish, I had around 5 bottles of lager (5%) so 10 units?
Then several martinis from roughly 9pm, maybe another 6-8 units (it was 2 units per glass).
Then my last drink at 11pm of vodka and orange.

A lot of units, I know. In my defense, I very rarely drink and it was a special occasion.

I would take the no. of units I had the night before, then times it by one and a half, taken from the time I stopped drinking.

That way I feel certain I'd be ok to drive, unless of course I'd had a real skinfull in which case I'd take a taxi or the bus.

I love driving too much to lose my license for the sake of a few Smirnoff's.

In your case, I'd class almost 20 units as a skinful and not arrange anything for the next day.

p.s. if you love water that much you should have drunk a bit more of it instead of all the Martinis!!

    I understand the following rule to be true;

The body loses one unit of alcohol per hour, one hour after the last drink taken.

    Any comments?
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Yes - that depends on how fast you metabolise alcohol, what you've eaten, etc. etc. etc.

I'd not trust my licence to that rule.;)

Blimey - they have the Internet on the other side.
    19ish units, I'd be dead!

I'd say it's about 20 units, so no driving for at least 20 hours after 11pm, bringing it up to 7pm today .... but even so most of those hours you're asleep (so burning through the alcohol at a slower rate) and you'd have needed to have eaten well today too.

You can put it away can't you!
