Can i cancel my gym membership? They've closed the pool!

I signed a contract earlier this year to an LA Fitness gym for one year. I primarily wanted to use the pool, but also the gym as well.

I am now just over 6 months pregnant, and i don't wish to use the gym, but have been swimming regularly.

Now my gym has been bought by another company who are decomissioning the pool! So basically there is nothing for me there now.

I feel that they have changed the services they provide since i signed my contract, so i dont see why i should keep paying them.

Do you think it's worth me writing to their head office?

  • Congratulations on your impending bubba xx

Have you read all of the T&C's of the contract you signed KM1976?
If it doesn't have anything regarding change of facilities I think you would have grounds to cancel as this will have a detrimental effect on you. It had a pool when you signed and now it isn't going to have one, I'd be wanting to cancel too if I were in the same situation as I only use the pool and sauna at my gym
give head office a call and see where you stand.

    Thank you! Very excited!

I had a look at the T's & C's and i can't see any mention of it so I will definitely call their head office. I was enjoying using the pool a lot :-(

In the spiel from the new company that has bought it, they come across as thinking people who use the pool are less important than those who use the gym. Great start.
  • new owners, surely needs new contract? loss of a major facility might also be grounds for cancelling?

Pools are incredibly expensive to run as energy prices have increased so much in recent years. They are very staff-intensive and are the root cause for a lot of complaints as members get very irate when it is closed for health and safety/ cleaning etc. They actually lose money for most gyms - I would never work in a gym with a pool again by choice.

Having said all that I'd read your contract in detail. You may be able to get a letter from your GP to say that it is not advisable for you to start using the gym itself so late in your pregnancy (it is advised to exercise but NOT start any new activity and the instructors should know this). Be very careful to cancel properly: some gyms accept cancellations at reception - tho it may well get 'lost' - some you must write to head office. You also need to know if it's a calendar months notice or a month from the date you joined IYSWIM. I'd strongly recommend you send anything recorded delivery. Gym chains tend very aggressive at debt collecting if you don't follow procedure so don't trust the receptionists word.
