Apex credit management not honouring offer

I'm not sure how much detail to go into on here to begin with, but this may be useful to others and also assist me in the process.
I had an agreement with Home Learning College and after long term sickness and being unable to keep up the payments this debt must have been sold to Apex Credit Management.
I received a letter from them Nov 08 offering to 'match' my monthly payments if I was prepared to pay 6 monthly instalments of £71. This calculated to 1/2 of the debt £426. Working this out with their matched payments, the debt would be clear in 6 months. So I wrote back agreeing to the offer and paid 6 months at £71 (even though this was a struggle, which I did point out in my accept letter).
This as far as I was concerned was settled in June 09.
I have received various letters from Apex and phone calls and I have responded by sending them all the various communication advising of the agreement.
Today I received another threatening letter about the outstanding balance £426, which equates to their matched payments amount.
My letter to them today, which will be sent recorded is as follows:-
I have received further communication from you today dated 10th September 2009 (a), copy enclosed.
I refer you to my previous letter dated 26th August 2009 (d), where I specifically laid out the details of the agreement with your company and enclosed copies of all the relevant correspondence, that being your offer letter dated 17th November 2008 (b), my acceptance of your offer to clear my balance by matching my payments for 6 months, letter dated 25th November 2008 (c).
I now consider your continual disregard for the agreement made and honoured on my part and your continual harassment for payment unacceptable.
As I advised in my letter dated 26th August 2009 (d), “Should I receive any further requests for settlement I will be seeking further legal advice”
As you have failed to send any replies to my communications as above I have no alternative but to seek further professional advice unless I hear from you by 26th September confirming your error.
My questions to those who may be able to help and other forum members who may have had the same problem are:
1. Has anyone else had this type of offer from Apex CM and the same or similar problems?
2. Am I going about this in the right way, or am I leaving myself open to them taking me to court ?
3. Can they add something negative to my credit file and if so can it be amended or disputed?
4. What should my next step be if they don't respond and send another demand for payment. I don't have sufficient funds to see a solicitor or go to court?
I can't abide these bully tactics. Had this been 6 months ago or more, I probably would have curled up in a corner and locked myself away, but I have been fortunate enough with my depressive illness to receive support and medication, which has helped enormously and to the stage where I can communicate as above.
Any assistance with this would be appreciated as I don't want to start doubting myself (which invariably happens and is the catalyst) and possibly making myself ill again. These companies don't deserve to drag me down!
