What are the modern"Speak & Spell" eletrical learning machine I can get for my son

Want my son to play with a electrical toy just like the old fashion "Speak n Spell" so that he can learn how to spell words. It had about 5 different games which asked allowed the child to learn how to spell words.

Games like hangman, say it & spell, etc...

If you can provide links to the product then this is very much welcome but not necessary.

  • why not do your own spelling play without a machine? when my kids were toddlers, i had words blu-tacked all over the place - 'table' on the table, 'door' on the door etc. as we passed by i would say 'what does that say?'. i also made up an alphabet chart with diagrams (apple, ball, cat etc), and in place of reading a book occasionally, we would read the chart and i would ask what the letter was. as they progressed, when we passed the word on the table, i would ask how to spell it. all done in short little bursts that went in very quickly as they didn't know they were being taught. it was a game but they learnt very effectively.

well, that's my moneysaving version anyway! one daughter now doing A levels and the other off to uni. sometimes the simplest methods shouldn't be ruled out for new technology.

Thanks for your advice. I do something along that lines at home where we play memory games using words etc

I am still looking for an electronic games. I don't really want to go into the reason and how/why this is what I want.. Just need for anyone to suggest a good electronic games that can teach spelling.. like the "speak & spell" did.

We had a leap pad for our DD, it's not all spelling, they can teach arithmetic too, or be used for story telling. It all depends on the book you put into the leap pad. Works for different age groups too.

  • We have a leap pad too, older version courtery off ebay. The one called 'plus writing' means they can do writing and maths too.

We also have the leapfrog fridge words - it will tell you what the letters are, and what 3 letter words you've made. DS loves this.

    *sighs* Speak and Spell

I loved my speak and spell.

Just found an online one here!!!! Even sounds the same!!!!!!

As for modern day equivalent, not really sure they have anything of that simplicity anymore sadly. Son has Leapster and whilst it's good, part of the reading and maths skills are for shooting down the correct answer rather than having to spell out alone.

We had these great things when we were kids.
    Think they were called books.

Admittedly you did have to turn the page yourselves, and they didnt speak in a dodgy american accent but on the plus side they didnt need batteries and you could get them free from a library.

Ok - harsh but couldnt resist.
Our kids have the leap pad games and to be honest I find them pretty awful.
They are very dictatorial in the order you do things and they find them pretty dull as well.

I would suggest doing a seach for kids programs or educational games online.
There is a lot of free stuff out there and power in your computer is 1000 smarter than todays equivalent of speak and spell.

Harness the interenet -Its not just for dodgy pictures.
