Quick SLC questimation for final year

Hopefully someone who has been income assessed for the full amount this year can help.

I am an independent student (aged 27) living with partner, household income less than £25,000. Living outside london starting final year of a 2 year full time foundation degree

so according to http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAndLearning/UniversityAndHigherEducation/StudentFinance/Afteryourfirstyear/DG_171569 should be £6,359 in a normal year.

However this year is my final year, also I owe an over payment of £1600for my adult dependent grant (as my OH was made redundant and was on JSA but then got a job part way through the academic year) so the grant is to be repaid (I thought it was paid pro rata - otherwise I would have never have agreed to be assessed for it as the intention was for my OH to find a job ASAP, not stay on benefits for a year.)

So what is the guess for a final year payment? Then would it be a case of deducting £1600 from it?

Thanks guys and gals!

Final you get less because they are not supporting you in the summer, so it will be a bit more taken off than that. Unless you have filled in a change of circumstances because you are going to do a final year topup (although you haven't stated its just a posbility! covering alll angles ;) )
  • I know I get less in my final year but does anyone have any idea/formula for guessing by how much. i'm there til May and then exams are in June? Then I can deduct £1600 from that to give me a guessimate for this year.

  • I've received my notification and it says I'm getting

    Loan of £3453
    Grant of £2906

That seriously can't be right? I'm in my final year? Am I being dumb?

Lokolo, I won't be doing a final year top up as the closest our university offers is 2nd year entry onto a clinical physiology degree so I'm going to end at the foundation degree.

  • Martine, your assesment should have been done on your previous years household income.

Is it a lot differant to the amount you had in the previous year?
  • By the look of it I would say you have been assessed as a new student, not a student in their final year! When you first did your PN1 form, (in your first year) did you state it was a two year course?

The form was filled in online for 08/09 and I did keep a printout - which definitely states 2 years.

However I have just logged on and noticed something interesting

I have kept a printout form when I applied this year too so I know for a fact I did not submit the stuff in red below

Give the UCAS course code (for example, the code for Law is M100). I did leave this blank as my course doesn't have one!

Give the UCAS campus code of the university or college (if this applies). A This was left blank
Which qualification would you gain at the end of your first choice of course (for example, BSc)?
    PGCE This said FdSc
What is the course subject (for example, Information Systems)?
TEMPORARY COURSE This said Healthcare Sciences
How many years does your course last for? 5 This said 2
Date you will start or did start your course. 01/09/2008
Give the full tuition fee amount that your university or college is charging for the course you will be studying in academic year 2009/2010 £ 0.00

When do you expect to finish your course? 08/2010 - surely despite the above may suggest I am in my final year? I don't know?
Which year of the course are you studying in the academic year 2009/2010? Second

I think this may explain why my assessment is all random. I have emailed my LEA now and queried this.

Last year I wasn't entitled to a maintainence grant as I had studied for two years back in 2002-2004

  • Yes I think you should contact your LEA, as i think the regualtions may have changed since I last did a students assesment.

I have heard of many loans being wrong since they decided to get rid of the LEA Student Finance sections. It will all be done through the SLC eventually.
  • I got a reply back form my LEA today who said until my uni send the slc my term dates they cannot answer my questions?

They neglected to answer the question as to how the information has changed since I submitted it online. :-(
