I recently bought a car and registered it in my name and today i received a letter frm them saying theres been a discrepancy with some details. They asked me to confirm the VIN number, engine number, make and model and colour.

What do you think this means?

Thanks for any help

could be nothing BUT could be that they think the car has been cloned or stolen and plates changed

Either their database is screwed up (my son in law was told he could not possibly have that size engine in the car despite having 5 of them in the family) or the details do not match up and the car could be a ringer / clone with forged V5  Hope you bought it from a reputable source and not a bloke in the pub ;)

It's standard letter that is sent by DVLA for a few different reasons.

How did you apply for logbook? Was it by sending off original V5/logbook or by the V62 form (with £25 fee)?

If it was the V62 form option then you may have accidentally written the wrong VIN number, or the VIN number is one digit out on DVLA system (eg a 5 is shown as an S etc).

If it was the V5/logbook then it could be that your date of purchase overlaps with another keeper's date of purchase (e.g. if you bought it off a dealer who had sent V5 off in their name with same date as purchase as you)

It could be a typo or error on the system has been flagged up and they just want you to confirm correct details.

So just fill out what they ask for correctly and return. Give them 4weeks to investigate and you will either be issued with a new logbook with corrected details or be contacted for further info.

  • Thinking about it, the car was a disabled taxation class and my girlfriend had to go to preston to change it and had to sign it in her name. but the V5 had my details on both with the same address though??

If your girlfriend filled it out with her details at Preston, and the original V5 had your details but same date then that's probably why you've had the letter.

When you return the letter to DVLA do mention this in a covering letter, and explain that you should be the registered keeper not her. This should sort it out for you
