Thankyou all for your advice and support, especially regarding some other not so supportive poster.
The issue is now resolved. The debt has been written off, and the rep disciplined as I explained the situation to this insurance company and agreed that the insurance was unfairly sold to me via a third party. Whatever has been said between the two companies I don't know, but hey, I doubt they will be trying such an underhand trick again.
So as for taking 'responsibility', yes I agree. The post pointed out my exact situation and someone forgot to acknowledge that these companies must also take responsibility which they initially tried to deny.
