A single person is entitled to claim Working Tax Credit provided that they are over 25. Your income in the last tax year will affect the amount you are paid, and over certain thresholds you will not receive anything.
The tax credits site is good: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/Taxcredits/

I tried their two online calculators , first the simple one then the more in depth one , I put that (theoretically) I work 39 hours , and put last years s/e income at £0 as it was a loss overall. And the calculator came out with approx £1500 for the year , does that sound about right? As that amount would help out a great deal0

That sounds ok, but you need to re-do it based on your current estimate, as that will show how much your final award will be.0
