Useful site for free stuff - REALLY!

I thought I'd post this here as most items offered in my area are for the home.

http://www.freecycle.org/display.php?region=United%20Kingdom

I have NO connection with this organisation, other than being a registered member of a few groups in my area.

Some of you may have posted this here before. I have a few times in response to other questions. I've not seen it posted recently, but to be fair I'm probably not looking at the right theads.

Basically, it's a collection of groups on Yahoo that's been going for little over a year. The idea is to keep useful items out of landfill and help people save money at the same time.

There are a few rules etc. One of them is that items offered must be free. All you need to do is to sign up and post either Offered or Wanted posts. You can join more than one group in your area. I'm with 4.

I've seen items advertised such as cars (with about 3 months MOT or spares or repair), kitchen units, washing machines, bicycles, musical instuments DIY tools/materials, baby items and clothes etc. The list is endless.

In the short time I've been signed up I've managed to bag a stairgate (to keep our new puppy out of certain areas of the house) plus a small quantity of building materials, and given away some old car stareos and a fish tank that needed to be cleared out.

These were all items that were worth very little or nothing in terms of money but can be put to good use. For example, a stereo system with a non working CD player is still good for the radio. So if someone wants a decent radio for a workshop or garage - there you go! Or if someone wanted to access the internet cheaply, there are plenty of early pentiums out there that are worthless but can be used for this very purpose (thinks of the base unit I chucked out some months ago before I found the site :(.

So, get registered with your local groups NOW and look on the message boards before you nip down to the town centre to spend your hard earned cash.
