Yes, this happened to my sister. She and her partner run a small business from home and she had a parcel to go to Thialand. At one P.O it was quoted as £18+ so she took it to another one and they sent it for £10+ exactly the same, basic airmail. I do know that the 1st PO had the old type scales and the 2nd was digital.

Well I tell you what happened. This Item that I post, they are all the same weight cost me 69p 1st class to post at my local post office, they have the older type scales that are non digital. It just so happened one day I was going into town where the big post office is and they have digital scales. I was amazed when they told me it was only 49p 1st class, is the system corrupt or what?. I have noticed before but not thought much of it when the main office seemed to be cheaper with some things, so I told my local post office and they got very worried. Now if the weight is close to the next level they won't print labels, they put stamps on so they are not responsible. I told them to get digital scales but they said they don't have the money. They also said and its a fair comment, in September I think it is, the whole weighing process is changing, its going to be weight and size that they change you for. So every post office will have to update their scales, lets hope they are digital.

I have now ordered myself some digital scales and I plan to work the postage out myself and use stamps.

Makes me laugh how RM say that the postage hasn't been paid in full......how on earth do they think it got across the counter otherwise?? Also from our post office we get the printed receipts with the weight and postage paid on them and the staff write the persons name and postcode on it to who we are sending it, so its easily proved that infact postage was paid. RM aren't interested though in refunding for their own stupid mistakes.

  • I once sent a birthday present to my mum and had the same problem: it was weighed and stamped at my local PO, but she got a postcard about 10 days later saying it was underpaid and she had to go and collect it and pay the extra plus a handling fee. The really annoying thing was I met my mum for a meal and shopping about a week after I posted it, so I could have given it to her then and saved us both some money, but I'd posted it because I wanted her to get it in time for her b/day.
That package was weighed with old-fashioned scales, but I'm not sure I'd trust digital either - I've sometimes been overcharged for items (e.g. fruit & veg) incorrectly weighed on shops' digital scales.
