I have a document which is a list of book titles, what I want is to extract from the titles a subject.

So if the title has, say history in the title of the book then it will put history into the subject box.

Titles are in A coloumn and the Subject is in B

Mark, i don't need the spreadsheet, but i'd be interested to see the theory you've used, can you paste a pic showing the values of the cells?

It is a bit of VB code. I have a table which list the key words (e.g. History) then a seperate table that will in the case above lists the book titles.

The code looks for the keyword listed in the first table and enters it in the second table.

Try using vlookup, it won't be perfect but should do the job reasonably well.

Wouldn't it be better to just search column A for a word?

Just wondering what A Brief History of Time, The History of Mr Polly (first 2 'not really history' titles I could think of) would throw up in column B...
