Help, pls, how to reinstall xp on sata drive with xp on but I messed up!!!

Had new sata drive installed with xp and pc drives. I then installed my programmes and somehow it now keeps crashing and there is nothing I can do. Tried restore but that did not work. Tried Norton Ghost to restore to a previos image made but Norton does not like sata. So I decided to start fresh and re install xp from scratch but do not know how. I put the xp disc in the drive, restarted the pc, but it opens as normal, not re install.
Can anyone help please.

I have a magic touch with pcs, I must do something that seems to always make them go wrong!!!!

Many thanks for your replies and help. Happy to give further information.

I don't think the XP CD contains certain SATA drivers. You might need to put the driver(s) on a floppy, boot from the XP CD and hit F6 when prompted to load them. Alternatively you can create a customised XP CD using nLite, which will allow you to add the drivers to the XP CD.

    Erm.... I think....

    No thats not true.

You just put it in and boot from disk like you would any other install.

As eshul says, on XP CD pre service pack 2, they don't come with the sata drivers for some chipsets (and possible on SP2 version too). From memory, I think some of the earlier AMD motherboards (pre 7xx northbridge, like 690) are the ones affected. Either need to use a floppy or slipstream the XP cd.

Ahh. No worries. I must be getting confused with the RAID drivers.

Hang on... Just found this link which suggests that you might need to hit F6 and install SATA drivers, although it does say that the drive won't be detected otherwise, and since the OP was able to boot into XP initially, I guess this isn't the problem.

If it helps, I built a PC that would install XP fine, but subsequently crash repeatedly. I eventually fixed the problem by removing an PCI card providing external USB ports. It might be worth seeing if the problem remains if any non-essential hardware is removed.
