VW Airbag deployed, any experts!!!

This morning as my wife started her car VW Polo 2001 model to drop our youngest son to the nursery, both the airbags deployed which created a big burnt hole in her dress and burn injuries to the chest and neck. My son was not harmed as he was in his car seat behind her. The car was in smoke so people passing by helped her to get out and our son.
No problem to the car and it is in perfect working condition.
Then we rang VW (headquarters) and explained the whole situation to them, who then advised us to get the car taken to VW (retailer) for further diagnostic check-up and find out the cause of the deployment.
They also mentioned that there is a fee for the diagnosis around £40 - £100 and then depending upon what the problem is they will give us the estimate of the job. Are they right to charge us for no fault of ours as this is a technical fault within the car???

The RAC guy also mentioned that he had not seen anything like this unless it is involved in a hard head-on crash.
We have still not contacted the car insurer regarding this matter until we hear negative feedback from VW.

Is there anything else that I can do?

  • have you owned the car from brand new? has it ever been involved in a smash?

  • I thought when the airbags deployed, the car would be a write off? I know it appears it has never been crashed, but how could you manage to get them back in working order again without stripping the whole front of the car down?

  • It is a second hand car and has not been involved in a crash!! Our friend managed to start the car, never tried to drive it though!!
  • vw's really are crap, just the marketing that people believe
  • As I mentioned earlier, no whacking or any major impact to the front end, just started the car and was about to move on...
  • Theres a few options here.

The front end has taken a whacking you werent aware of which has damaged the censors

    Some sort of short circuit

I think either way it comes down to a maintainance thing so dont see why you would be exempt from paying to get it done.

Its actually recommended in most cars that the airbag systems get replaced after about 10 years anyway.

In all likiehood it sounds like this will be needed early in your car. I dont think it will be ridicolously expensive although whether its worth spending it on such an old car especially if you are worried to drive it in future.

you would think the sensors would do a check when turning the car on, and not fire the airbag as your started it

OP, did you have your seatbelt on when it went off?

it could have been before you owned it though.
it could be quite simply a worn wire from one of the sensors it could have been rubbing, shorted out and off your airbags went.

shouldnt fire if the car has just been started
  • shouldnt fire if the car has just been started
why not? if the sensor wiring was faulty then it might, in fact it did.
