Renting in Newry and surroundings

I'm a blow in to the Newry area....I'm willing to tell you The Truth about areas that you may not be so familiar with (that's if I know anything). I might have to contact you via private messages to avoid upsetting people:o
Lol then you are a gem to me! I am made slightly anxious by one friend who is trying to tell me that almost all of Newry city is bad and that it will be hard to find somewhere that wont be frequented by idiots who would delight in keying a nice car! Latest advisement is somewhere around Belfast Road/Rathfriland road - sound like good advice?
Thanks!Always overestimating...0 -
Yes, I would say that is good advice! Of course there are no guarantees but the area you mention is good. Also look for Ashmore and Dublin Road areas - Dublin Road is especially posh and so used to posh cars, lol! There are other good areas too - Newry isn't quite as bad as your friend was trying to tell you. One thing I would say is that Newry gets gridlocked on a weekday morning. It's not an especially big place but the traffic and the traffic management is dreadful if you need to go across town, so I'd suggest keeping that in mind when house hunting. Or you can just leave a bit earlier before the traffic builds.0

Thanks again Snowy. I was aware of problems with traffic which has somewhat led me to wanting a place that is within walking distance. I will be up near the intersection of armagh road and the bypass so anywhere within a couple of miles of that is probably ok.... so if you hear of anything, please do let me know! :-D
ps. nice to hear newry isnt so bad.... i was starting to get worried that there were no nice people there at all!!Always overestimating...0 -

QUOTEThanks. I am going to take a run down at the weekend, pick up the papers and get a good look about to see where looks like a decent area to live. QUOTE

Ok.... so I got the papers and there are a few options I can call about (though the first one I tried was gone so that does not fill me with hope!). But I was thinking to myself that it might be easier if i were just willing to jump onto a bus so I went looking for bus timetables....
JESUS CHRIST ALMIGHTY! Public transport is utterly ridiculous!! I have mused at it for years without really having ground but now I just despair. It is WORSE than I have suggested! The train - did no one think to have a service that gets to newry from belfast in time for work commuters? It gets in at 8.55 - no chance of getting to work for 9 and no other service for hours. Ok, buses within newry... translink have obviously forgotten that not everyone knows the town! They have lists of stops but I have no idea where they are and they provide no useful map to help. I am left on google maps trying to find out. Then once I do find something, it becomes clear that the 3 miles from one side of town to another actually will take longer than walking because you have to change bus and wait for another.... oh what idiocy!!!! Argh!!Always overestimating...0 -

Welcome to Newry!!!
I am sure you noticed the train station is about half a mile outside of Newry, so a fart in hell's chance of getting to work before 9.30 am. It is rather hopeless. And it's a downhill walk into Newry, therefore an uphill walk at the end of the day, like you are going to want to do that in the evening after dark and in the rain.
May I suggest a trip to Waterstones or Easons and pick up a street directory for this "city". It will help you enormously navigating your way around.
I must admit I found similar problems finding my way around when I moved here, ie everyone I asked for directions assumed that I had some local knowledge and referenced a local landmarks to help me. I must have asked the same bumpkins who put the bus maps together.0 -
