Can't agree with anyone who recommends norton - best function on norton is the uninstall routine.

Couldnt agree with this more, some people like it, some people find it easy to use, some people buy it cas they basically dont see any others on the market that look better - PC World etc.

Norton software stinks in my opinion, its slow, it tries to do too much, its even been known to completely miss a virus before its too late.

I'd rather use PC-Cillin before anything done by norton.

i recommend avg and nod32 - both of which are available for a low cost :D - norton is very, very poor. It will also prevent certain functions from running on pcs and some users havent a clue how to tweak it. For a firewall, I personally use zone alarm pro but the old free tiny personal firewall (2.105) and sygate are excellent options.

It always makes me laugh when I see this happening in a thread. As soon as Norton is mentioned, it seems a difference of opinion ensues.

Norton in the past was reknowned for being very intensive on the system. However, in the latest version, this seems to have been sorted out.

Norton have been hit before with malware problems before they've issued an update, but so have others! People tend to shout when it happens to Norton though.

Antiviruses are a matter of personal opinion and preference. There is no absolute 'best' for everyone (although Kaspersky has seemed to have the highest detection rates regularly for a long time now).

My only questioning of this thread is why we need this as a sticky, when it is only repeating a lot of the info in the sticky already at the top of this thread?

Thank you I have now installed JAP. I already use zone alarm, peer guardian 2 avg and all the spyware removers. It's nice to learn something. :D

I have to agree fully with what Rex has said. Yes at one time Norton did have some issues but there are far too many people who just like to knock Norton for the sake of it.

The other Stickies have far more useful information in them and less about personal preferences! Perhaps this tread will get a mention in one of the current Stickies.

I agree there is no need for an extra sticky, we have plenty of very useful information already by people who have contributed a lot to this board for a number of months/years.

The Wizard - I will put a link to this thread in the Computer Security sticky.
