MY son who is almost 32 has been on sickness benefit/income support since 1999 until July 2009. The government cracking down on long term benefits has decided that he is fit for work and he has signed on at the jobcentre.

He signed on 07/08/2009 and has today has received a letter saying he is not entitled to JSA because he has no NI credits for 1997/98 and therefore is not entitled to any benefit.

When he first approached job centre he told them that he had been on income support for the previous ten years and they told him that he had to claim JSA.

What does he do now?

He needs to claim Income Based JSA. Does he have a partner, or any savings?

I thought the criteria for JSA was NI credits for the years 2006/07 and 2007/08
if the OPs son was on IB shouldnt he have been getting NI credits.
or am i missing something here.

and what has 1997/98 got to do with it?

Perhaps she has got mixed up with the dates, they should read 2007/08 instead of 1997/98
