How much to charge a lodger???

Hi,

i'm not sue if this is in the right place but here goes...

A few months ago my brother was in the process of moving, and got offered a new job. He was going to be working away for about 3 weeks at time and then home for a few days. As it seemed madness to rent a house and work away i said he could use my spare room as a crash pad.

The situation has changed, and he will now be living at my house all of the time for a period, (i have no idea how long), and he has mentioned paying rent.

I don't want to be robbing my brother blind, neither do i want to make it too attractive for him to stay here long term. we will be sharing food bills, so bearing in mind that food will be considered seperately how much is fair to charge him? (He earns more than me, and he's on more than basic wage).

Many thanks for your help
Nimbo :D

Well, the government rent-a-room scheme allows you to charge a lodger £4250 per annum without paying any tax on that.

so that could be a useful starting point...

or maybe you could look on property websites to find out what it would cost him to rent a similar place to yours with one other person, and then charge him something like that amount (maybe a bit less as he's your bro).

don't forget a contribution towards bills.

If you previously received a single person discount on your council tax then this will end so you'll be paying the extra 25% council tax each month.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
