PayPal help pls!

Hi

We sold an item on ebay but listed it as cash on collection only. The buyer has automatically sent payment by paypal.

We don't want to accept this mainly as we're worried about charges to receive the money and also that the payment could be retracted in some way.

Have only ever paid for stuff on paypal before but never used it to receive money.

Pls can someone confirm if there are costs to receive the money and also what the risks are if buyer collects item and then do they have an ability to clawback the money through paypal?

If we refund the money and ask the seller to pay cash instead are there fees charged to us for refunding the money?

Ta muchly from paypal novices!

You have to offer paypal as a payment option, so they have a right to use it.

Yeah you do incur charges, not anything significant.

Why are you worried about the money being retracted? That sorta thing doesn't happen, unless the thing you are selling is faulty/whatever, then you personally have to click the button to issue a refund.
  • There are costs to receive through Paypal, as well as to withdraw if it's under £50. You're also right in that the buyer can claim the cash back through paypal if they're not happy....the system is built to favour the buyer too so if there is a problem you won't find Paypal particularly helpful.

You can refund the buyer and ask them to pay cash on collection but if they don't want to you can't do anything about it - if you sell on eBay you HAVE to accept Paypal.

    It's appalling, but it's true.

Yes it does happen, and you often don't get a choice to refund.

The fees are 20p plus 3.4%
This is my opinion. There are many others like it but this is mine

This is why collection items are problematic you do have to accept paypal but try and talk the customer out of it. If they insist say that you will ship the item to them (work out a cost) If you accept Paypal on a collection the buyer could put a claim through paypal and claim it was not received. You will not have electronic proof of delivery so you will have to refund and lose the item.

As you are a new seller I would be very wary as scammers target new sellers.

AS a new seller this post may be useful as it explains the difficult position with paypal and collected items:

  • Hi

Just a quick note to say many thanks for the helpful replies. There is nothing wrong with the item at all we're just worried about the horror stories you hear about Paypal that is all!

I've bought through PayPal before without any difficulties but as this is an expensive item we were just worried about possible scams as suggested above.

Fingers crossed we can work something out...thanks again for the information.

One possible solution is to ask the buyer if he would like a discount for cash on colelction, then if he agrees you can safely refund his paypal payment and wait for him to arrive with cash.

However, if he insists on paypal then you are stuck and you need to assess how good the buyer looks, their history etc and then decide whether to take the risk.

  • I've always wondered (not that I really need to know as as of yet I'm barely a buyer on ebay and too lazy at present to be a seller!) why you cant simply allow them to collect and then send them a receipt through the post via trackable means to give you the electronic trackable info?

anyway thats my two cents. lol

As its not the item and just an envelope all they would need to do is say that the seller hasn't sent the item and paypal would be able to tell by the postal cost as if its a pickup only its bound to be a big item so will cost more than a 1st class stamp to send.

Not any more. Withdrawals are free now.
