Are you a virus/trojan expert?

Could someone please explain what happened?

I usually use IE or FF but still have an old Netscape browser on my PC which I used to use and mail program set as default but it's not assigned to a live POP server since I moved service etc and no longer use local mail program.

Today when I closed my IE browser, out pops my old Netscape mail program with an email address already filled in to a sender. I have not clicked any email address today but more to the point it was an email address of someone I know and it's an email address which I have not stored in my address book. As the mail program popped up automatically, it soon closed itself automatically.

Now as you can imagine, I am not happy about what happened as I have no idea what has been stolen, email addresses, inbox/outbox contents or what else? Since it's not connected to a mail server it's possible that nothing was sent out or if it's trojan why would he/she has opened up a mail program to steal it? I thought trojan operates quietly in the background.

I am doubting an integrity of the person whose email address was pre-filled and I'm so disillusioned today.

Not a virus expert by any means, but if anything happens my computer these days, the first thing I'd do would be to download this, update and run a FULL scan. Then come back a post the results. Let us know how you get on.;)

  • I scanned my computer with AVG but nothing was found.

What I don't understand is why this person's email address was pre-filled but nobody else! It must mean that this person hacked into my pc because she wants steal my information and there is no point in sending it to anybody else is there.

It is actually a big deal for me as I am considering leaving an organisation for this. Don't want to work with two faced people if you know what I mean.

Not necessarily. It should could be a virus. AVG is high on the list of the top 10 most useless antivirus programs. If you still do a scan with Malwarebytes, and see what that picks up.

It's very unlikely that the person who's e-mail address came up has hacked into your computer. Instead I'd suggest that since as far as I know, Netscape is no longer supported, it will have security loopholes, and it could be a virus trying to send spam mail to this contact. You'd be much better uninstalling Netscape.
