Ipa & overtime

Hi we both of an IPA set to start 01st Oct however my hubby has been advised that he may need to work away for 3 weeks in a few weeks time this will create overtime and an nightly allowance for being away do I need to inform OR if it is only for 3 weeks he has not done any overtime within the last yr so I am sure this will not be a regular thing, if I need to inform OR how much of the overtime will they take, this has not been agreed yet so won't until next week if this is for definate. He worked away for a week or so a few weeks ago but has had been off work due to illness and my income for Sept has dropped due to bonus the amount he earned replaced the amount we lost so no worry. But worried about earning the extra.

  • When the overtime hits his paypacket and you know how much over the usual wage he has got then let the OR know about the extra. I think they usually take 50% but some one will correct me if I am wrong.

Will they take 50% even if this is a one off
  • Yes they will, though I have seen some OR's say don't worry about it you can keep it. So just let him know when you have the extra and see what he says.

Will the OR take 50% if its like to be a one off and normally there is no oertime but they have a big contract that required him to work on site so that he does not have choice really if he wants to do it or not anybody else been in the same position
  • do they average it?

When we filled income in on IPA form we were told to average this hubby hasn't done any overtime in over a year but has had time off sick so took an average but this is a one off site contract which will give overtime and then after 2/3 weeks will revert back to normal wage so its not actually and change in his income long term so I don't know how they can take an average I was advised by a 3rd party as this is not a change in income and a one off we do not need to advise OR

Unofficially that is correct, the OR is only interested in permanent increases as a rule, but that does depend on how much we are talking about, if it only amounts to a couple of hundred, the OR most likely wont be interested, as the cost of collecting is greater than the gain.

Hi thanks for comments it is not a permanant increase could last 1-3 weeks say between £200-£500 depending if he stays the 3 weeks he does not have a choice if he does it or not its a one off site contract just means they will have to stay overnight and weekends as this is not local
  • personaly, as he is not on a fixed wage, and the OR is aware of this and worked his IPA as an average, then that is how i would view a few weeks OT, at the top end, £500 may sound a lot but as an average over a year, it is not.

Its a tough call, but as the OR is working on an average, i would stick my neck out and say this is not classed as an increase in income.

But it has to be your call Queen, i am not in your shoes;)

Thanks I think I might do that its not been confirmed for definate yet but looks likey I confirmed the average wage because of time off sick because over the 3 months before he had a couple of weeks off over time if it had been a few days I would have put his full income down which is the same each week as this is on basic with no overtime until just a little worried
