PS3 won't connect to internet. What should I check? What is most likely cause?

Hi all

Before I go any further, this is my sons PS3, and I don't know much about how it works. All I know is that we've had this PS3 for 1 year now and it has previously worked perfectly well. However, my son says all of a sudden he "can't connect to the internet to play Call Of Duty 3".

Hopefully, somebody will read this post and tell us to check something we've not already checked etc.

1. He clicks on the wording 'Playstation Network'
2. It shows a circle with the shapes inside, and it says......'SIGNING IN'
3. My son says "It stays on this for ages. Once it took 3 hours, and in all that time that's all it said....SIGNING IN.
4. He then tells me it says something like 'Sorry, an error has occured'

So, he said "Here, I'll do a connection test"

1. He clicks 'Network Settings'
2. He clicks 'Internet connection Test'
3. It says 'Please wait'
4. It says 'An ethernet cable is not connected'

The bit we don't understand is....

It is a wireless connection!
The other 3 laptops in the house work fine on the wireless network.

So what does it mean by 'An ethernet cable is not connected' when it is wireless???

Judging by our comments here, has anybody got any advice where we should be aiming our thoughts?

I assume that it is impossible to be the fault of the router in the house because the other laptops are all working on the wireless network???

Any help would be appreciated..................

You will need to run through the internet connection wizard in the network settings area and select "wireless" instead of "wired" connection.

Work through this adding the network encryption key you have set on your router.

The PS3 will then connect and get an ip address and test itself for connectivity.

Will test this when I get home later.

No problems. I had done mine the night before as i moved house and needed to reset the connections.

There is new firmware out as well v3.0 which you should upgrade to if not done already. (System Update function in the same menu as the settings)

It has put BBC iplayer onto the menu screen on startup as one of the main things.
