Msn messenger update problem

Hello
Is anyone else having a problem with the latest update of MSN Messenger (I think it's called Windows Live Messenger now, but I still call it MSN).
Usually I hold off updating something when I am happy with it, but they have sent me an email about the update and then an alert arrived via Messenger itself. So I thought I'd take the plunge and update now. Their plan is to make it mandatory for everyone to update to the latest version (14.0.8089) over the coming weeks.
I chose only to update Messenger itself, and unchecked all the other boxes as I don't need anything else they offered. The update seemed to install ok, but when I tried to log in, it went through the process of thinking about it for a few moments and then did nothing and returned me to the login again.
I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling, but the same thing still happens. I enter my login details and password... it thinks about it then returns me to the login again. I even tried system restore for various dates over the past few days, but restore would not work.
Just wondered if anyone else has tried to update their MSN Messenger to this latest version and has been unable to log in.
Does anyone know how I can get the old version back?
Thanks.

Hi again
No one responded to this post the first time round, and it got duly buried.
Three weeks later and the issue still isn't resolved.
Just wondered if anyone forced to upgrade to the latest version of Windows Live Messenger is now experiencing the same problem signing in i.e. you enter your sign in details & password and after a few seconds it returns you to the sign in screen again.
Have been in touch with Microsoft's customer support team several times, tried all their troubleshooting steps, a fresh installation, sent them the log files they asked for (twice), and am still waiting for a solution.
Managed to find an older version of Messenger online which still works, but I don't know how much long for.
Seems I'm not the only one having this problem:

I hate the way that they force upgrades on you
Can anyone help?
