Is a cellist appropriate ?

Hi, what do you think to having a cellist to play whilst guests are arriving at the reception venue? I've had a listen to some samples of music on youtube, but I think a cello alone sounds a little, well, down and low! what do you think? Thanks

A cello is low and a double bass is lower still. Its your choice as to whether or not you have a cellist - if you want one then have one.0

Thanks Horace, That's the thing I don't know what they sound like? I have asked the lady were thinking of if we can meet to listen to her play but she's on holiday for the next 4 weeks so trying to find out what I can before. I have seen a string quartet playing at a wedding before and it was fab, but I can't picture a cello alone.DMP Mutual Support Thread Member No 315Married 03/04/2010with many thanks to MSE Wedding boardLO 23/03/12 Special thanks to TTC thread0

I have found some sound clips on the internet - some are a cello and pianist though but it will give an idea of what a solo cello sounds like:

https://www.cello.org/cello_introductions (there is a whole selection of different cello soloists on here).

personally more of a fan of 'cellos than string quartets for background music, because it won't be as loud and will blend in a bit better. we're having a harpist to play in the meal, and just playing some of our fav songs and people arrive to the reception0

Thanks for those links Horce, I'll have a look : )
jonny power, I guess you've seen both a cellist and a quartet, did you not think the cello sounded a little low and well, may be more suited to a funeral? some of my friends said it will be fab but I just need a little convincing myself. Thank you for replying.DMP Mutual Support Thread Member No 315Married 03/04/2010with many thanks to MSE Wedding boardLO 23/03/12 Special thanks to TTC thread0 -
Cleo - have a listen to the sound clips on the links I have posted - a cello can sound happy and melancholy - it depends on the piece of music being played.0

I'd have to say no. The cellist is among the most inappropriate of all the stringed instrumentalists. And is, to my knowledge, second worst only to banjo players.0

Quote lol : ) your responce made me laugh, I had to read it twice to take it in : ) he he. Now a banjo would be hillarious!DMP Mutual Support Thread Member No 315Married 03/04/2010with many thanks to MSE Wedding boardLO 23/03/12 Special thanks to TTC thread0
