Best thing to do with our stuff - storage?

Hi all

Well the long and the short of it is that we've bought a flat - move in date 25th Sept and yesterday we found out that we have to move out of our flat on Monday!

We've both got places to crash for the 10 days or so between moving out of here and moving in to the new flat but we're wondering what to do with our stuff.

My hubby is planning to rent a van (which we were going to do to move anyway) and just store the stuff in it for a week at the hotel where he's working. This is woking out pretty expensive - at £25 a day - and I wondered if there were cheaper (and maybe more secure?) options.

We don't really have anything of great value except for sentimental value really but we do have some big stuff like a bed and a sofa bed so it's not stuff that we could store in someone elses home easily.

All ideas welcome!

Thanks

Alison

Try a different storage place or two. They got loads of offers on - couple of weeks free to try it.

Self storage would be the best way to do it. What if the van were nicked ....

Also, with self storage you can be moving stuff out over the next few days, rather than all in one go.

Big yellow have a nifty website where you can pick/choose the size you need and an instant quote system.

I used Access self storage a few years ago. You basically rent a tin container within a complex of containers. Really easy to access and secure.

There's plenty others on the market too like Big Yellow - check you local area there will be something
  • Well I have looked at a few self storage sites thanks to your posts and annoyingly they don't put approximate prices on.

I have requested 3 quotes so hopefully tomorrow I should have an idea of price. I always expected them to be really expensive though (don't know why) but I did find one price guide on Big Yellow which was from £13.50 - £25.00 per week.

If they all come back around that price then not only have I found somewhere safe to store stuff but I'll have saved loads of money too!
  • Sorry, forgot to say a HUGE thanks!

Access allow you to quote online - though I don't know if there is one close to you.

I had a quick look - a small unit (3' cube) is £25 per month, a medium unit (10'x7.5'x8' high) is £135 per month, a large (16.5x7.5x8) is £200 per month

We used Safestore - very good, secure units, access anytime. I really wouldn't leave stuff in a van. It cost around £25 a week for a medium unit, minimum rental is one week, though if you rent for a while they usually have offers on.

I used big yellow recently. Pretty good but ended up paying a fair bit more than the quote on their website by the time we had paid insurance, security deposit, padlock charge... If you go for them though it's worth haggling as they do seem to have quite a lot of leeway to reduce prices down and give you special deals.
