New gas supply

We're moving to a house without gas: so new supply needed. I contacted British Gas initially as I thought they did it; they would organise it they said. 10-12 weeks lead time! Got quote today after 4 weeks wait. Not impressed.

In the meantime tho' I did my research; Transco do pipes, or SGN in my case in Scotland. Called them, very helpful - they checked works depot schedule, should be 2 weeks install after receiving confirmed order from me. I can then use cheapest supplier I want in my area, eg Scottish Gas, Scottish Power, etc, and they will install meter for free. They Emailed quote, schedule of work and street plan within 24 hours. Very impressed!

Costs? British Gas = £594 SGN = £505.

The lady at SGN told me they do the job for British Gas anyway, as they are the main contractor, so BG must charge an extra £89 for admin!

So I've just saved my first gas and elec bill.:j

I'm pleased that you are happy with the service you have received from SGN Connections. You were advised correctly, British Gas would simply have forwarded the new connections request onto SGN and would have taken no more to with it.

You are now free to contact any supplier to have the new meter installed. I know that if you were to choose Scottish Hydro it would be SGN Metering who would install the meter for them and this can usually been done very quickly also.

But hold on, I may be wrong, but I thought that you got a rebate in the region of £400 if you get your connection through BG and then stick with them as your supplier for a certain period??.. I may be wrong though!?
