Basically we left home 2 years ago to start renting our own place once our daughter was born. We went straight onto prepayment meters for both Gas and Electric, as it seemed like the best idea at the time.

Now we're wanting to change the meters for normal ones, so we can pay our bills by direct debit each month - to make our life easier. Only thing is we haven't a clue what's involved..

We did phone our current electricity supplier a while ago and they said it will be £50 plus they will have to do credit checks.

Is this correct? My OH who has the bills in her name has alot of adverse credit history, so I'm assuming they'll decline her.. or do they only check it for certain information? Are the credit checks easy to pass?

Are there any companies that don't do credit checks for Gas/Electric?

Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated. :D

edit: also is there any way of getting these companies to waive the £50 fee, like you can do with things like Sky etc? or is it set in stone? see how clueless i am! :rotfl: I just don't want to get ripped off.

Some companies charge £50 to change the meter and some don't, however I think all will want to do a credit check depending on the outcome they may ask for a security deposit which can be about £150 depending on the results.

In getting normal(i.e.credit) meters fitted, you are applying to be given(potentially) credit of £hundreds.

So it would be prudent for any company to check you are credit worthy.
  • Ok thanks for clearing that up for me!

Is the deposit refundable then if they ask for one?

Also what's the best thing to go for, dual fuel with the same company or both seperate? they're seperate at the min as it seems to work out cheaper - e.on for electric and ebico for gas.

And is there certain tariffs I need to look out for? i.e the fixed price ones etc..

    Thanks :D

It is impossible to say who is cheapest as it depends on your consumption and where you live.

It will certainly be one of the internet tariffs that will be cheapest.

Sometimes dual fuel is cheapest - sometimes not
