I prefer venetian blinds (and yes there are easier ways to clean them!) mainly because being a nosy git, you can never see fully out of vertical blinds, whereas you can with venetian!
How do you clean them Amanda ? I find them such a pain:confused:
Cherish those you have in your life because you never know when they won't be there anymore.

I've just bought this little duster from Lakeland for my wooden venetians

    http://www.lakeland.co.uk/microfibre-venetian-blind-duster/F/keyword/blind/product/21691

Its ok just to put it quickly over them, a cloth is probably more thorough, but its such a boring job isn't it :o

I have verticals in the lounge and dining room. i've never had to clean the lounge ones, but the dining room are on patio doors and I had to take the weights and links out as the dogs would get tangled in them and then panic pulling the blinds with them. I throw them in the machine to wash and rehang slightly damp.
  • Maybe my venetians aren't as clean as I think .... but to clean mine I close them one way (so I see the bottoms of the strips) and go over them with the feather duster, then close them the other way (so I see the tops of the strips) and do the same thing. Takes seconds and I'm happy with the result. Do it regularly (it's so quick!) and nothing builds up. Not a pain at all.

Personally, I hate the look of verticals ... had all the verticals in our current house replaced with venetians at the earliest opportunity (though personally would prefer no blinds at all but hubby likes his privacy!). House we're moving into doesn't have in verticals ... hurrah!

I seem to be very much in the minority with my preference for venetians! :) Maybe it's because it's what my parents have always had so it's what I grew up with...

Anyway for cleaning them, I use a damp cloth, close the blinds so the slats are pointing downwards, then I gently push the blind against the window frame with my free hand I wipe across the slat (they're about 1" wide) from left to right, then move down a slat and wipe from right to left etc.
My widest blind is about 6' wide and I don't think it takes 5 minutes to do :)

I have metal Venetian blinds in my flat and they aren't too bad to clean. I give them a dust every now and then, when they get too manky (the previous occupant smoked) I take them down to clean.

Spread them on a hard floor on top of an old bathsheet or dustsheet and scrub with a non-stick scourer and sugar soap or Stardrops: takes about half an hour per blind, but I have very large windows. Can be rinsed with a shower head over the bath.

I prefer the look of venetians. The wooden ones I dust with a fluffy duster (recommended on an allergy programme). The others I soak in the bath into which I have added about 3 dishwasher tablets, let them soak a bit then rub with a bottle brush, hang over washing line to dry.

I have had verticals in the past. Moved house twice since and have bought venetians for every window in both houses. I love the way you can tilt them according to your needs and how they can be lifted right up or part way up as needed. No way on earth would I ever buy verticals again. They are too inflexible and look cheap and nasty. My venetians are about an inch deep, are a silver metallic and were purpose made for each window and they look very smart from outside. They aren`t a problem to clean as we don`t smoke and have no pets, so a quick wipe now and then does the trick
