Getting a "Picking Licence"

  • Hold the phone! I just searched for totters rights and it brought up this little beauty... seems someone has got the hump because they threw something away at the tip then found it up for auction.

In the replies a guy says: "As I understand it local councils can give licences called "totters rights" to those working in such facilities. These licences mean that these "totters" (old, old word for an old, old job) are allowed to sift and sell what they find. Perhaps someone with UK local government knowledge can be more precise and give references but I am not sure you have any legal grounds, sorry."

  • When I go to my local tip I often come away with more stuff than I took - okay, so it's not TVs or stuff like that, but still I've never been challenged over pulling stuff out of the bins (once picked up a dozen demi-johns from the glass recycling :j). Guess it's all down to your local people. Ours is run by Biffa, IIRC.

  • I used to be involved in this kind of thing you really do find all sorts.

Varies from area to area... Some areas the rights go to the highest bidder and you get first dibs on bric a brac and scrap metals textiles etc. Other areas you'll get paid by Local Authority or a Contractor for your performance i.e tonnage recycled etc which obviously the councils want higher the better and they receive money per ton... but you'll have all wages to pay for the site and bills etc to pay from that. Bills include everything you can think of and more believe me!! but you'll get your scrap bric a brac etc...

Forget having TVs and electricals away... and it all comes under the WEEE regs. You'll be off the job quick smart.
