Driver display problem, help needed!

I upgraded my graphics card drivers a few days ago (not sure if I did it right) and since then the screen keeps going black and then back to normal with a message in the corner by the clock saying ' Driver display atikmdag stopped responding and has successfully recoverd.'

I would say this has happened about 10 times in 2 days.

I don't know what to do??? My graphics card is the ATI Radeon HD 3650.

It never does recover properly either because it usually happens while I am playing runescape :o and the game freezes along with the browser (IE) which I then have to open task manager to close

When you removed the original card, did you remove the previous drivers first, inc catalyst etc? Also, are you using the drivers supplied from CD or from AMD?
  • I didn't change the card just updated drivers which i got from the website, think it was AMD. I unintalled CCC because since I updated drivers I got a error popup every time I logged on.
  • Try this:
    1. Download the latest drivers from here.
    2. Download and install Driver Sweeper.
    3. Uninstall your current drivers - including the CCC - then restart in Safe Mode.
    4. Run Driver Sweeper, select ATI - Display and click Analyse followed by Clean.
    5. Finally, restart your computer and install the new drivers.
If at any point the Found New Hardware wizard appears, close it by pressing Cancel.
  • Thankyou, I am trying to do that now, but how do i get into safe mode. I've forgotten :o
  • Its a dell 530, just saw your avatar. Guess which game I've been playing recently!

Notice how some of the words are different colours? They're hyperlinks; if you click on them, the pages they take you to will tell you what you need to know.

By the way, the error message you've been getting is correct: it does recover successfully. If it hadn't, you'd likely be looking at a BSoD instead!
  • Ok i did figure out eventually how to do safe mode lol. I know about hyper links but I didn't see that one!

You wouldn't have guessed I do a IT systems support course at college!!!1
  • Oh yeah and it worked! Thanks
