New BT Broadband - online banking won't work

My dad's recently installed BT broadband but cannot now log in to his online banks (Egg, LTSB, Halifax). He can view the banks' homepages but gets an error message everytime he tries to login. He's spent ages on the BT helpline - they blame the banks, who say it's a browser settings problem. I'm 150 miles away so can't help. What can he try to change things? Any suggestions?

what is the error message? Is he using a router, or firewall of any kind? they may be interfering with port 443..

I used to get this if my antivirus was disabled (Norton) switched it on and voila.

Thanks, especially for the link which looks really helpful - hope my dad can follow its tips.
He uses AVG which is always enabled, so I think it's something else.
I use BT broadband and have no problems with bank sites.

Could be something to do with pop-ups. Had this on occasions with HSBC as log in details come up on pop up so had to allow them for the site.

If I have problems with some sites I tend to switch to Firefox from IE that sometimes helps. But I suspect maybe not in this case but might be worth a shot if all else fails.
