financial assistance for uk students studying overseas (USA)

My son (british & uk educated) is in his 4th/final year at university in USA. He is on a 100% scholarship so no tuition fees but it costs about £1000 pm for university extras like healthcare, rent/bills, cellphone, plus flights etc. When he originally went over in 2006 i was told student loans etc are only available to students studying at uk uni's - regardless of whether they are british or not. I was also told that uk students can get a student loan from a usa bank but must have 2 usa resident guarantors. He knew nobody over there when he first went and still knows nobody who he feels he could ask to be a guarantor. I have therefore paid/loaned him the money. As a single mum this has been a struggle and i'm worried i may not be able to keep it up much longer. Does anybody know how he could access financial support/student loan in the uk. He has 3 uk bank a/cs, is age 21, has an excellent academic/athletic resume-great grades/awards etc. He has worked so hard and achieved so much-he deserves the chance to graduate! Any ideas/advice would be much appreciated!

I'm afraid that the situation hasn't changed in the last 3 years. I hope he sorts something out but it might have been better to have had all the funding in place before he embarked upon the course.
