acces and control main pc via laptop in house

Hi guys

have my main pc set up as a media centre connected to the tv, what i would like to do now is get a cheap laptop to allow me to surf but also to access the main pc and start processes and launch stuff via the laptop

is this possible? is there a program that will allow that without me having to accept control from the pc every time

Cheers

  • I agree with using LogMeIn - its great and free too.
  • RealVNC
    tightVNC

Both good programs and free for non-commercial use

Logmein requires net access (so overkill in my opinion for accessing machines in the same house!

If they are both windows (or if the media server is windows based.)

Then use the tool "NetMeating" it's in every version of windows and lets you control the desktop of a remote machine like TightVNC and LogMeIn but it's already installed and required little setup.

all you need to do is go to the run box and type in "conf" that will start up the setup wizard for NetMeating.

But what programs are on your "media center"? their might be some utils' that do some remote controlling of media centers from other machines.

think there are a few programs which turns your wireless mobile phone into a remote media center controller :) lol

But it's a bit redundant using the net to access a pc only a few feet away :) when you can do it quicker with a local program :)
