At a guess... overheating / auto shut off.

Open the case up, and check the CPU fan. Give it a clean (canned air does the job). Same to gfx card fan (if it has one)

Otherwise, load the BIOS screen, and under some setting will probably be an option for system monitoring. It will show a live display of temperature and fan speed. On a core 2 duo under normal use, this should be under 50, and probably nearer 35-40 if you have a decent cooler. Anything much higher could be a blocked fan, heatsink moved or failing bearings.

i had a very similar problem some days would run for hours fine then other would shut down every 5 to 10 minutes, turned out to be the power supply. i put in a working one and have not had problem since, although i did eliminate all other possibilities by removing hardware 1 bit at time till i was only left with the motherboard and 1 stick of RAM, i also run a memory test just to make sure it wasn't RAM i used http://www.memtest.org/ downloaded ISO and put onto disk using http://cdburnerxp.se/download.php then booted from disk, but to be honest whenever i have had a RAM problem PC has gone to a blue screen first.
  • I had the same problem with my computer, just kept turning off like the power supply was turned off, Had friends who supposed to know about computers tried everything and nothing worked.
Got fed up and said to the wife this weekend i'm taking it apart and going to really give it a clean over, the fan inside was all clogged up and as Jaydee said up above was overheating, now good as new ( touch wood.).
