Switch of at the wall, and on again, several hundred(thousand?) times a year to save up to 60p in the year?

Might be the simplest thing for you, but I suggest others might just think that is eccentric! Me for one!

Well you don't always use every item every day so in reality items will be off for a few days at a time. Each one will save x amount, older stuff will save you more, your equipment will be happier in an 'off' condition.

And most important of all, in these days of global warming, and high energy prices, if all the standbys in the country were turned off I'm sure the CO2 savings would be massive.

Off Topic, but can one say that Global Warming is absolutely and indisputably proven? Ageologist might have a different opinion. Did anyone see the Krakatowa programs. The eruption happended in 1183 and caused temeratures to drop well in to C20th. Made me think, that!

I just looked at a brand new LCD TV standby spec, "less than 7w" they can't even be bothered to tell you what it actually is or what it's minimum value is.

6w would be 5 pounds per year.

Some idiots dispute it, usually the ones paid by Esso or the Bush administration. To everyone else its freekin obvious, You only have to see how much ice is melting year on year to see the problem, this makes the sea less salty, which in turn hinders and will eventually stop the gulf stream.

Luckily for you you won't be around to see any major effects, but your grand children will (if you have any).

Gee, thsnks for calling me an idiot. :j I agree for typing 1183 instead of 1883!

Someting is clealy happening, but from life experience things ahppen where the is a flavour of the month (years) explanation and prognosis, that is eventually superceded. That said I certainly do not advocate we sit back and do nothing, just that we do not panic. And yes I do have grandchildren. I'd put the moral degenercy of the age they are destined to grow up in, if things continue as now as of greater priority.

About 10 months ago I stopped using my dishwasher and my electric bill dropped about £40.00 a month,we used it once everyday now I only use it on Sundays. Then we stopped using the tumble dryer, again my bill dropped about £25.00 a month,we have put low energy light bulbs in all the rooms and we never leave tvs on standby,we used to switch things on without thinking but now I am a lot more energy efficient.

I didn't call you an idiot, I said some idiots dispute global warming. If you dispute global warming that makes you an idiot in my book. But from your earlier post I thought you *might* dispute it, however, your position was not made absolutely clear, so I had no idea if you were an idiot or not.

Another addition to the standby consumption arguement:

Sky digibox I just looked at has a standby rate of 17 watts!
2 dvd players and a freeview 'force' box all gave no data!!!!
