  • I know someone who had a butterfly release by a butterfly sanctuary trying to breed and release native species back into the wild which had declined - so it's not all cruel!

In my opinion it is cruel but an additional point is..I am absolutely terrified of moths and butterflies and would have a panic attack if thousands of the blighters flew at me! If you do consider it I'd check for phobias with your guests!! (or am I the only freak.....?)
I have the same phobia, and also think it is barbaric:(

A colleague was telling me how a sky lantern landed on someone's head when it was released at a funny angle

They have been banned in some EU countries - can apparently set light to farmland and garages etc. I really wanted them until I started reading all the hazards about them - plus we live near the cost and there is a load of info about not releasing them near the coast.

rene2be, glad you found out from your bridesmaid before booking the butterflies - I doubt she would have been too impressed. :D
  • A friend has given us a wishing lantern as a present but we daren't let it off now after reading all the info on the packet!!

  • There was an article somewhere about the wiring in sky lanterns being eaten by cows and causing damage? Because a lot of country houses where people hold weddings is near farmland and countryside, but people don't consider what happens to the lantern once it's been released. Apparently the paper bit is biodegradable, but they're working on ways to make the frame part more enviromentally friendly too.

  • Would it be really random to suggest maybe bubble machines if you want that kind of effect without any form of cruelty. You could even try using ecover or similar detergent to make it even more environmentally friendly.

LOL!!! Thats the same as us, we got one to see if they would be a good idea and then read the back of the packet and did a bit of research and it is now sat in our cupoard!! We let one go and it was great but I felt guilty for days and OH went running down the road to make sure it didnt land in the neighbours field of horses (it went out over the sea in the end but I still feel really bad about it and wont do another one!!).

of course its cruel! its like breeding any other animal in captivity and then releasing it with no training as to how to survive

butterflies are lovely yes, but i hardly think they are going to breed them somewhere nice like the damp rainforest-type butterfly houses you go and visit, more likely a cardboard box or whatever they "battery farm" butterflies in with the dead ones siphoned off before they arrive!!

Sorry , I know I shouldnt but laughing at how to train butterflies to survive in the wild:rotfl:

As an aside I would assume that a few die before release and then a few might get trampled so it could be considered as being 'ethically challenged '' ?

Um, I'm actually with miss ratty on this one, I know of a few release programs where they are releasing endangered species back into the wild in the hope of re-populating that area. If this is the case then no, release is not cruel. :)
