Has anyone heard of a company called EQL? They have been phoning daily asking for my son but won't tell me who they are; apparently data protection even stops them from telling me what the initials EQL stand for! I'm assuming they are a collections agency but couldn't find anything thro' google (unless he's secretly studying with equestrian qualification limited!) so any info would be much appreciated.

i just had a phone call from these people for my boyfriend, god knows how they know i have anything to do with him or what but i dunno who they are and what they are doing phoning me and not him?
  • I have had this company on the 'phone this morning, and thanks to all of the posts under this thread, as EQL were as unhelpful as has been previously indicated, "Debbie" quoting data rules for not answering simple questions, and oblivious to my concerns over the use of my 'phone details by somebody who is totally unknown to me, I have at least managed to clarify what was a very worrying conversation. I was told that the use of my number must be an "error" and it will be removed rom their system, however the address their debtor has used, they claim, is in Slough- why continuously phone an 0208 London number for a Slough address? Their phone code of 01789 is closer to that of Slough at 01753!
Using the number from these threads I was told by a slightly less unhelpful person that my 'phone number is not, now, showing on their system, and I was given the following Freepost address for the letter which I will be sending to their "compliance department":
    Equidebt Ltd
    Freepost
    CV2449
    Warwick CV35 9WZ
Couple of observations- what sort of company allows a loan without at least checking some basics, or have any of the modern IT addresses systems which would flag a mis-match of an address to a telephone number?
When told that they are in error, why be so bloody minded when it is in their interests to have correct info?
Data Protection seems to have become a Corporate bye phrase for poor staff training, laziness and stupidity.

Not everyone may know that there are a number of call screening devices on the market that prevent your phone even ringing if the calling number is on your block list and only let previously unknown numbers through after the caller has identified themselves, its then up to you whether you take the call. Numbers that you have programmed as friends can call normally. Most allow you you to record a message that the caller hears before the device terminates the call and I believe some allow different messages for different callers which opens up all sorts of possibilities! The down side is most are getting on for 100 quid which might put them out of reach of those who need them most. I've always been very secretive about my number but if ever nuisance calls become a real problem I'll be looking to get one.
  • I have just received a text from a company pertaining to be EQL telling me I can pay monthly for my Motormile account! I do not hold anything called a Motormile account and giving me a free phone number 0800 032 4280 to discuss and a reference number to quote. I'm so glad I have found this link on here and I will obviously be ignoring this text.

I got a letter from them about 3 weeks ago saying i owed Motormile £889. After looking on here i ignored it as it must be over 6 years old and does not appear on my credit report. Another letter arrived today making an offer to settle for ££250. I've shredded it.

I just had a call from EQL asking for a Mr ***. I said that you have the wrong number. He then mentioned the address that Mr *** lives at which is an address that I recognise. This is because the property consists of 4 flats of which my son owns one. My son is not Mr *** that EQL are trying to contact and who is probably a tenant or former tenant of one of the other three flats.

I can't stop wondering how the hell they got hold of my telephone number.

I have no idea how EQL got hold of my home telephone number - my link to the property is only through my son. I did ask but the caller was evasive and just said he would delete my telephone number from the records.
