Most of the time it will be genuine, a mobile phone bill, credit card bill, shop finance that hasn't been paid etc. Where it isn't correct the only way to stop it is to speak to them and get it resolved that way. Otherwise credit files etc will be damaged (righly or wrongly).
I guess the number is on nuisance lists because most people that default on payments are in denile and will consider this call to be a "nuisance".
I don't like debt collection companies but it seems to me that lots of people who have a problem suffer from the old ostrich syndrome which doesn't work.
Also if they call and get your son or the person who's name they have been given they will confirm who they are once they have been told they are speaking to the correct person.
However they are trying to protect your son, if they call a number and someone says can I speak to Joe Bloggs, and you say thats my son who is this, they don't want to say "this is the missed payments collection company" he has a right to privacy.
Which debt collector do you work for??
please tell us and don't say"of course I don't work for them, I'm just like everyone else" because nobody here will believe you.

I just recieved a call from a pathetic individual wanting to speak to my Girlfriend, when asking what the company does or even what EQL stands for she couldnt tell me "Due to data protection"
She soon put the phone down when I stuck a flea in her ear.0 -
I have had these muppetts call me twice today asking for my daughter who was not at home. They did all the data protection thing. Turns out they won't even tell my daughter what it's about because she can't remember the address that she used to live at 5 years ago so they can't discuss it with her because of ...er ...data protection! Talk about tying youself in knots.
I have taken the advice of a previous poster here and suggested that they write to her. Thanks churcrat0 -
NEVER EVER speak to a DCA on the phone - refuse to answer security questions when they do phone - they 'll soon get bored & scurry back into the sewer were they came from...0

The fools only seem to think that data protection applies to them - yet they expect people to answer personal questions about themselves when they ring...the phrase "what planet are they on" springs to mind....0 -
I got a call from EQL, 01789473888, when I asked asked what does it stand for, the guy said he can not tell me unless they do a security check so they know they are talking to the right person. I said then that conversation has ended, and put the phone down.
But not before initially confirming that yes this is Mr Cook

Complete bull by this rogue company.
Report them to the OFT & trading standards asap.0 -

We are having constant calls and letters from Equidebt currently. For your information it was originally from MacKenzie Hall, they are all the same company, they just move it around their office to make it look like different companies.
My wife is being chased for a credit card debt that they won't tell us about. We have asked for details - my wife is excellent with money and has no record of the debt they claim - but nothing has been forthcoming!
We have even written and explained that even if the debt was valid it is now statute barred due to it's age - as claimed by EQL.
Calls continue though. We know it is just something we will have to put up with but the door knock threats do upset my wife.0 -
You shouldn't have to put up with at all.
I would write to them recorded asking them to provide proof of the debt and also include that their phone calls are harrassment and to only contact you in writing. If they still continue after this then report them to OFT and trading standards, at the least they will get a nice fine for being investigated
