Why not? Would it be better if they didn't accept cards at all?

It costs the shop a minimum to accept the card.
Say they make 50p profit from you, and it costs £1 to accept your card what would you do?

some of our smaller local shops set a minimum charge of £5 which seems reasonable given the charges the card companies impose on them

Where i work - in a charity shop. Our shops have a £5 minimum spend for all cards because it would cost too much if the transaction was below £5.

  • The reason that its free in supermarkets, are they have a permanent connection to the banks to verify the details, small businesses which only use a card machine once in a while, dial up and verify the card and details which is why it takes longer.

You will find that supermarkets pay much lower fees than small retailers too!

My local shop has a min transaction of £10 or it might even be £12.

But as I only ever buy things like 2 lines on the lottery or a packet of crisps or sweets and with cash I never need to use my cards. So don't tend to take much notice of the min transcation spend.

Does it concern me, no as they are business and need to cover costs and make money.

In supermarkets I do use my card for less than £5 transaction never use to but I do now.

Mind you I would have never have thought of using a card in a charity shop. As surely like the printed carrier bags it means less money is going to whom the charity are suppose to be giving to.
