I can't spend £4250 a year using AmEx. Noone told me no Cashback is paid to you if your Cashback amount is equivalent to less than £25.00 which equates to £4250.00 spend on the card excluding any promotional offer.

This figure represents an increase in the minimum qualifying threshold up from £12 to £25 and is really difficult to get.

I wasn't aware of this when I applied and want others to be aware. In many cases it makes having a card pretty unworthwhile.

So you have to spend £4250 to qualify for the cashback? I have £30 cashback on my card but that is due to the 5% promotional offer, in no way can I spend £4250 on the card. Will I still get cashback given I have more than £25? tks

I personally think it is unreasonable for the company to introduce new t &cs to existing card holders!
  • Just use the card once or twice a month for small amounts and pay it off in full by the pay by date.
  • Received a cheque in the post today after a letter to Amex. Rebate of £203.00.
    Complain, or lose it.

Shall not be using this Amex in any form in the future!
  • Same result for me - complained in writing and received an apology and told the cheque is on its way. Glad they've closed my account now as I receive the cashback now rather than waiting till the card anniversary date.
  • Historically, American Express are the card of the wealthy and my take on this is that they're trying to concentrate their efforts on those people and don't want to be bothered with anyone else.

Putting it bluntly, the average Blue card / Platinum credit card holder (I hold both) doesn't spend enough for them to really care whether you whinge about not getting your cashback and close your account or not. Those that complain will probably get it back, but it will be on the understanding that you will either qualify next year and get the money or you won't qualify and won't get anything, or you will close your account which they probably want you to do anyway.

Having worked for Amex in the past I can say with certainty that £4250 isn't a problem for many of their customers to spend in a month, let alone a year, so many will qualify for their cashback. Those that don't (like me more than likely) Amex simply don't care about.

I had the same kind of treatment on my Nectar AMEX card, I have had it for 3 years and is my day to day card to get nectar points, works out better for me than the cashback card.

I called to put the limit up which was £5700 unchanged in all that time as this was the start up limit and they refused point blank, I asked to cancel and they just said ok, passed me to cancellations who offered me some Nectar points to stay I said I wanted the limit raised they still said no and said they would cancel the card at the weekend then.

I still wanted the Nectar points so said I would call back after thinking about it which I didn't. I only spend about £450 a month on it and pay it in full every month so I guess they couldn't care less whether I stayed or went.

Overall answer was I have too much available credit as have 5 credit cards all with zero balance which was fair enough I guess.

Why would you have a card you don't use ?

Especially a cash back card. One of the main rules is to use it for all spending so you maximise the return.
  • Hi All,

I have had the same issue. AMEX send a letter 21/09 saying they were closing my account in 4 days. The letter said:

"On a regular basis, we review and assess our customers Accounts. As part of this process we consider a number of factors including Account status, payment history, credit rating and how frequently you have used the account."

For those who have managed to get a rebate, was this the same text in your letters.

I have complained by phone, and a letter said that I would recieved a cheque. However, I received a letter today saying that as the account was cancelled on 25/09/2009, they are unable to refund. As the account was cancelled prior to 12 months of opening, as per T&C's. If I recall I should be getting a rebate of at least £200.

By the sounds of it I should complain in writing and say that I met the T&C's.

    Thanks for any advice.

Not just the wealthy - many people I know have them for business expenses, and its very easy for them to get up to several grand in a month

Annual train season ticket gets me fairly close to the magic 4k!
