I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that even watching TV via a laptop will require a TV licence. Worth double checking...
Edit: Just checked the TV licence website and it says:
It makes no difference how you watch telly - whether it's on your laptop, PC or mobile phone or through a digital box, DVD recorder or good old-fashioned TV set - if you use any device to receive television programmes as they're being shown on TV, the law requires you to be covered by a licence.
In exceptional circumstances you may be covered by your parents' TV Licence, but this is very rare.
Yes they try and not make it clear but you do not need a TV licence if you do not wtach TV live. i.e. you can watch 4od and BBC iPlayer (for catchup shows, just not live).0 -
I'd be wary about buying expensive pans and too much food, as there's a good chance items can go walk-about. Happened a lot in my halls in first year, especially with food!
I would recommend taking some plastic plates/bowls (the ones you can pick up in supermarkets in summer...usually come in nice colours as well) as they'll take more of a bashing than china ones would...also a mug may come in useful, along with cutlery, etc.
Bedding is also a good idea (I found Primark very good for this). Clothes wise, be very choosy about what she takes...half the stuff she takes she probably wont wear a lot, so it'll just be taking up space. Tell her to just take an autumn/winter capsule wardrobe. I learned this one the hard way. lol.0 -

she's not really into clubbing and drinking (only cocktails occasionally!!) so she's quite sensible in a way. tho' she tells me that she's looking forward to Fresher's Week and is expected to go out every night.. (is that normal??)

Will the uni halls have a duty to inform them of students with tvs in their rooms?
Well if theres no aerial then its impossible to watch TV.... but if she says she is playing Sims and not watching then theres nothing they can do.
In my first year of halls I recieved 3 letters saying I must pay TV licence, even though I didn't even have a TV lol. Bloody idiots. I spent £5 on phone to them explaining and for them to tell me to ignore the letters!0 -
I'd put in a vote for coat hangers because likely as not there won't be any in the wardrobe.
An extension lead /plug adaptor would be useful too as there might not be enough sockets in her room.
I loved having a kettle in my room so I didn't have to go to the shared kitchens just for a coffee and toasted sandwich makers were the handsdown most popular most used items in the hall
A throw for the bed would probably be good as when I was in halls people tended to congragate in each others rooms sitting on the bed so it kept things cleaner.
A a big compfortable rucksack for lugging stuff back from the supermarket and library books around.0 -
My daughter has an iron and ironing board provided. She has quite a large lockable cupboard in the kitchen so she can keep all her pots etc & food locked up.2013

Definitely coat hangers! Dressing gown is also useful to wander around in. If she's in Camden she'll be able to get the bits and pieces she needs off the high st & market - there are plenty of cheap shops around.0

If you have a mini fridge might be a good idea to have one of those in her room. She can keep her fresh food in it so it dosnt get taken from main kitchen fridge.:j0

mini fridge is a good idea but check she is allowed one as both my daughters are not allowed them in their rooms.2013
