Back to the original post...

Hi to anyone & everyone that can help,
I am hopefully soon to get a job working n Birmingham, near Birmingham New Street. I currently live in Gloucester so will need to commute at peak times around 7/7.30am & returning around 6pm. I have looked at week/month tickets but the prices are over a £1000, I looked 4 a ranger/rover ticket but don't know or can't find 1 for this route & I've looked at Family saver card's but am unsure if I can use them on this route at these times. Can anyone help or does anyone know of any other ways I could greatly reduce the traveling cost by train on the above route.

All your help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Aaron.

  • According to National Rail Enquiries, a 12-month season ticket is £3044. Will you be travelling alone, is your possible job full time (ie travelling about 5 days a week), and how old are you?
I didn't study anything at school. They studied me.

At the time of day you want to travel, the walk-up fare is going to be £26.50 for an AnyTime return.

Season Ticket prices from Gloucester to Birmingham...
    7 Days = £76.10
    1 Month = £292.30
    12 Months = £3,044.00

So with a seven day season, travelling five days, you would save £56.40 per week.

If you can afford a monthly season, the savings will be greater.

    Alternatively, look for Advance Singles.
I've just picked one day... 14 September.
    Dep Gloucester 07:02, arr Birmingham N S 07:56. Advance Single £13.50.
    Dep Gloucester 07:46, arr Birmingham N S 08:47. Advance Single £13.50.
    Dep Birmingham N S 17:42, arr Gloucester 18:35. Advance Single £8.00.
    Dep Birmingham N S 18:30, arr Gloucester 19:25. Advance Single £8.00.
    So daily return becomes £21:50.
The more in advance you book, the greater chance of making bigger savings.

Are you eligible for a Young Persons Railcard?
This may help (but not with season tickets), but there is a minimum fare during peak hours, which I am not too familar with.

I looked at this a month or so back - if you are prepared to travel via and change at Worcester (slower, less frequent and slightly unreliable service) you can save a fairly small amount on regular tickets.

I'll leave you to look it up and see if it's still the case.
