need to ask banks for closed account details

Hello everyone and thanks for reading this thread
I am intending on reclaiming unfair charges from natwest and nationwide
the only minor problem is that I have no record of the now closed accounts apart from the opening branch and my address details. In a headstrong mood I
telephoned the opening branch of natwest today expecting some typing and an answer from them. All I got was a defensive soul that kept asking why I wanted the information, i said it was for my records and then I was told that I would need to post a letter and they would forward it to their records department. He made it sound like the information was somewhere in with indiana jones's lost arc and that it would be a long process
does anyone know if I am just posting this into a black hole or the correct way to go about doing this.
I havent even tried nationwide yet, ill just hang on to see what you fine folks recommend.
thanks in advance

My brother was in this situation.
Use the template letter on this website for obtaining records of past charges under the Data Protection Act. The banks have a legal obligation to provide that information.
However, don't go into your branch, or send the letter there. They told my brother, shamefully, that it wouldn't be possible to find records of his old account. I found out from this site that is incorrect.
Write to their data protection officer - google the address.
Don't expect them to be any more helpful than they have to be, which it sounds as if you're already experienced.
They have 40 days to respond. Don't forget to enclose £10 which is the maximum they're legally entitled to charge you - it might save you time.
In the letter, write your full name, address at the time, date of birth, when you closed the account...as much detail as possible.
I can't guarantee they'll reply, because fortunately in my brother's case he found a document from years ago in a last ditch rifle through old files, so my advice would be give it one last search for anything whatsoever which might give you the account number - even old receipts which would have the first few numbers written on them before the last three are crossed out.
Be tenacious and keep at it if responses are not satisfactory. Follow up threats of complaint if they are not meeting their legal obligation. If they needed money from you, they'd soon find the records.0
