Part Time Working

Hey,

I'm going into my second year studying human resources in a few weeks but I was just wondering how many hours other students were planning on working a week? I think I'm going to do 16hrs a week which will leave me feeling a bit skint but i'm going to use an o2 money card with a £30 budget a week. The thought is depressing me a bit but oh wells eh? Investment in the future blah blah lol :)

It's a bit unclear from your post, but are you taking a student loan as well? Deciding how much you work is purely a matter for you to balance up against your workload. If you feel you have few hours in uni and can complete work in the allocated time then it's definately a good idea. Personally, I have a job in a supermarket where I work 5 hours a week and I work more when I have free time. This suits me better than being committed to more hours as I can easily work the minimum without any fuss.

What student funding do you get at present?
  • The age old question that many students ask! I worked full time through a levels and uni, but would not advise this unless you are finding your studies easy and you find a job you love or that complements your studies, and if you have the drive to do it. I like the idea of keeping your working life flexible but it's not always possible. You could try getting a couple of pt jobs, say a few hours each and then do more hours when it suits. Seasonal work over xmas and hols is a good way of topping up your income if you work full time and save it for the coming months. You could get a pt job and supplement it with something like catalogue delivery so you can work when it suits you. I've recommended studentgems.com on some of my other posts and it's worth a look and free and might make you some extra cash. Putting cards in the local shop for dog walking/gardening/errand running type work may also score you some work. It's a matter of being proactive and planning what you need against your capabilities and the free time you have. Plus take advantage of any student offers and discounts to save you money. I don't know if this applies but don't be precious about things, shop in charity shops and car boots, cook simple meals in bulk such as pasta sauces and soups/stews etc that contain cheap ingredients and can then be frozen for the week/month. What many people see as necessities are often really luxuries so if you can live without it do so, but most of all do not dwell on having little money, it won't last forever and if it means you are working towards something that will make your life better the short term struggle will be worth it! I wish someone had given me that advice years ago believe me!
