In or out of guarantee?

When does a manufacturer's guarantee start? Is it the day you ordered the product or the day it was delivered?

Background

I ordered a cooker from Comet on the 4th September 2008, order was confirmed on the 6th September 2008. The online receipt states that delivery was on the 24th September 2008 although it may have been a few days earlier - I need to check my old work diary for confirmation.

I received a letter stating my guarantee would run out on the 4th September 2009 mid August but ignored it as they wanted me to pay 1/3 of the price of a new cooker to extend the guarantee. However tonight one of the knobs has fallen off the damn thing.

So, when does then original guarantee run out? When the cooker was ordered or when it was delivered?

I'm grateful for any help or push in the right direction of help.

It is normally invoicing date, but i would check the ts and cs of the Manufacturers Warranty.

I work for a Catering Equipment supplier in charge of the service department and the manufacturers warranty is very unlikely to cover the knob falling off. It would only cover mechanical and electrical failures.

I would speak to Comet anyway.
  • Yes I think its when they end you a invoice but it could easily argue its on day of delivery

Some manufacturers will run the warrenty from the date of delivery. As long as you have proof of delivery, which they will either ask you to produce when an engineer comes round or they might ask you to fax them a copy.

It's worth speaking to Comet and/or the manufacturer.

Thanks all, I'll speak to Comet and see what they say. I have the delivery receipt and as they have fixed the cooker previously (same problem but different knobs) I hope they will be reasonable about this. If not then I'll be looking for a domestic appliance engineer and hoping they won't be too expensive
